The German Ambassador owns a German Shepard. His guard walks it every day on the same route as my morning run. Lots of hired staff walk dogs in the morning.
Obama is coming to Kenya in July. Since that has become common knowledge, it seems increasingly cool to be an American in Kenya. Every new Kenyan I meet is either from Obama’s village or related to him. The roads leading from downtown to ambassadors row have been painted with fresh reflective lines. Potholes have been filled in, and the sidewalks are being redone. I’m not complaining. Until these beautiful roads shut down, probably the day he arrives.
You should always ask a restaurant what they have available rather than asking for a menu. The menu is not an accurate reflection of what is available, and they may have things not listed.
Most domestic flights are cheap and have lots of schedules. But they also get cancelled quite quickly and sometimes without notice.
Running here is a double edged sword. You may get hit by a car, your lungs will be filled with dirt, and the elevation wears you out. But it feels damn good to run. Cycling looks to be the same way…
Minimum wage is less than $4 a day usually for an eight or nine hour shift. That’s not extremely livable no matter how simply you can manage. Especially if you have a family.
Multiple wives is common thing. Marital affairs are too. Most tribes favor the men, and a woman who walks out cannot take her children.
Driving is a game. Outside of corrupt police being a bit more aggressive is necessary to get anywhere in a reasonable time, which can still result in traveling speeds below 10mph. In fact that’s cruising some days.
Kenya is corrupt. But so is every other country in their own sweet way.
