The little things

On my way to the coast again.

Yesterday I was in it pretty deep, overwhelmed by all the little worries a mind can hold.

And then I read this blog: http://markmanson.net/life-purpose

It was posted by a friend on Facebook, and luckily at just the right time.  What a refreshing way to look at life.  And glad to know I’m not too old, too disoriented or too comfortable to keep moving forward.

At dinner on Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting someone new.  The boss of a friend of mine in from the Netherlands on business.  Happy hour turned to whisky, whisky turned to cigars, and we topped off the night with cognac. Between Dutch jokes and burgers we started on the topic of Africa, and why I was here.

I love this question, because I surprise myself every time I answer it.  I believe that the way I perceive my big move has evolved over almost a year now (wow!)

I clumsily blurted out “I love Africa, especially Kenya!  I’m so happy here!”  Hearing those words come out of my mouth realized an answer I hadn’t thought about in a while. This has always been the dream. I’m living it.

I never anticipated how difficult it would be at times, but it’s worth it.

You know how you have those long distance best friends who you can message anything at anytime?  In my frustration yesterday I texted, “Africa is hard!” To 3 of such friends, and I got 3 different responses:

1. “Me too!” Thank you, not helpful

2. “You’re tough, you can handle it” Very much appreciated

3. “For you? Or for Africans?” Speechless #firstworldproblems

So I come full circle, I’m on my way to the coast again, happy as can be, moving in the right direction, and working my way towards a more defined purpose.

It’s the little things that stress you out, and the little things that bring you joy.  This week was full of little things.
